555 Studios Accelerates Virtual Production with Volinga’s 3D Gaussian Splats

Introduction

As the first fixed virtual production studio in Brazil, 555 Studios has become a market reference for innovation and quality. With a portfolio that spans entertainment and commercials for global giants like Netflix, HBO, Amazon, TV Globo, and Disney, the studio prides itself on delivering not just LED panels but full-service virtual production solutions. From parallax tracking to seamless integration of advanced technologies, 555 Studios helps clients realize their vision from concept to delivery. Always looking for ways to stay ahead, the team explored Volinga’s 3D Gaussian Splats technology to push the boundaries of speed and realism in virtual production.

Challenge

Commercial clients often hesitate to embrace virtual production due to one key barrier: time. Building environments traditionally takes weeks, slowing down production schedules and increasing costs. For 555 Studios, this meant a constant battle to balance speed and quality. They needed a way to deliver photorealistic, production-ready environments in a fraction of the time, without compromising creative excellence.

“Commercials often rejected virtual production because the content creation process took too long. With Volinga’s 3D Gaussian Splats, we can finally deliver photorealistic environments fast enough to make virtual production a real option for this market.”

– Juan Fernando Collazos, Colorist/DIT – Virtual Production, 555 Studios

Solution

555 Studios partnered with Volinga to test its 3D Gaussian Splats (3DGS) technology in a Proof of Concept (PoC).

  • Collaboration & Support: Volinga’s team worked closely with 555 Studios, listening to feedback and making critical adjustments, particularly around lighting, to meet the studio’s high standards.

  • Streamlined Workflow: Using Sony cameras in RAW and S-Log, the team captured spaces multiple times, edited them into polished 90-second videos, and transferred files into ACES-compliant EXRs. The workflow integrated seamlessly with Unreal Engine and Disguise, allowing for relighting, color correction, and multiuser collaboration.

  • Standout Features:

    • Real-time checkpoint preview inside Volinga to see your progress

    • Exceptional glass and reflection rendering

    • Improved scaling, cropping, and relighting options in Unreal

By combining Volinga’s tools with their expertise, 555 Studios introduced new efficiencies and creative possibilities into their pipeline.

Results

The PoC exceeded expectations. Some findings include:

  • Production Time Reduced: Scans can be ready to shoot in one week compared to the 25+ days required to build environments from scratch.

  • Quality & Realism Achieved: The photorealistic outputs met and in some cases exceeded the standards required for final client approvals.

For 555 Studios, Volinga proved that Gaussian Splats are not only viable for production but also a transformative technology that saves time, reduces costs, and elevates quality. 555 Studios showed the Volinga 3DGS scene to one of their customers, who is a film director, and he immediately shouted, “Animal!” (a Brazilian saying for something amazing), proving this kind of photo-real content is exceeding expectations.

“Volinga’s technology cut our environment build time from more than two weeks to less than one. The speed, realism, and quality exceeded our expectations and have completely changed how we approach virtual production.”

– Carlo Vecchi, Head Of Virtual Production, 555 Studios

Conclusions

Volinga’s 3D Gaussian Splats have become a powerful addition to 555 Studios’ virtual production toolkit. The collaboration demonstrated how cutting-edge technology, combined with a hands-on and adaptive team, can remove barriers to adoption and open new creative pathways.

Looking ahead, 555 Studios plans to expand its use of Volinga across future projects. Their advice to others considering the technology is simple: “Good capture is key. Don’t rush it. Invest the time to do it right, and the results will speak for themselves.”

As the studio continues to pioneer virtual production in Brazil, Volinga’s technology will play a central role in helping them deliver faster, smarter, and more immersive experiences for their clients.
